Our Mission
To preserve and protect the unique tallgrass prairie ecology of the Wildcat Creek Valley, and to foster enriching firsthand connection to it.
Land Preservation & Stewardship
With resources raised through charitable contributions, the 500-plus acres of preserved tallgrass prairie ecology that make up Prairiewood’s current operation are being acquired incrementally by Prairiewood Connect to be protected in perpetuity and managed with practices that optimize its ecological health.
Educational Courses & Programs
Curating and collaborating on a variety of dynamic programming and educational offerings for all ages, Prairiewood Connect cultivates hands-on opportunities for increased knowledge and appreciation of the tallgrass prairie.
Activities, Events & Lodging
Offering an inspiring variety of activities, event spaces, and lodging amidst the tallgrass prairie, Prairiewood Connect plays a unique role in bridging the widespread “experience gap” — fostering the journey from mere knowledge about, to intrinsic connection to, the majestic tallgrass prairie.
Husbandry & Volunteerism
By providing opportunities for engagement in land stewardship, Prairiewood Connect benefits from the additional resources available through organized volunteerism, while reciprocally providing volunteers with the enrichment and wellness that come from land husbandry.
“Without love of the land, conservation lacks meaning and purpose, for only in a deep and inherent feeling for the land can there be dedication in preserving it.”
— Sigurd F. Olson
The Story: A Generational Opportunity
Building on the Past
Nearly thirty years ago, Rebecca and Kail Katzenmeier moved out to an obscure four acres of prairie and woodland tucked along the bank of Wildcat Creek just west of Manhattan, Kansas. Led by their deep conviction in the importance of personally experiencing the wonder of the natural world, they soon began strategically acquiring, preserving, managing, and sharing additional undeveloped native prairie patches, all within that same unique area of the Wildcat Creek watershed. To that end, they founded Prairiewood Retreat & Preserve in 2010.
Since then, Prairiewood has been operated as a mission-inspired business, providing world-class lodging and event space nestled amongst the unique and compelling ecology of the tallgrass prairie. In doing so, Prairiewood has truly become the beloved community and regional asset they and others envisioned — a place where senses are awakened, perspective is renewed, and imagination is inspired. After 25 years of painstaking persistence, these efforts now stand as a beacon for private land conservation, affording direct connection to this cherished landscape for thousands of guests and visitors each year — many of whom would never personally set foot in the tallgrass prairie if not for the accommodations and access provided by Prairiewood.
Securing the Future
In accordance with the original vision of the Katzenmeiers — that this special land not just be protected but held in a more durable structure that ensures its preservation and visitor access for generations to come — the Prairiewood Connect Foundation was born. And today, a generational movement is underway to transition the ownership and operation of Prairiewood to the nonprofit Prairiewood Connect Foundation.
